Hiking & refreshments
from Wachenheim
The circular hiking trail leads to the ruins of Wachtenburg Castle with views over the Rhine plain.
It dates back to the 12th century and consists of the upper core castle and the lower castle. A curtain wall with five towers protected the upper castle. The Wachtenburg was largely destroyed during the Palatinate War of Succession.
to the ruins of Wachtenburg Castle
This hiking tour starts at the market square in Wachenheim and ends there again. On the market square, we recommend taking a look at the Simultankirche St. Georg and the Ludwigskapelle. We set off past the town wall and along the country road for a while. After 1.8 km turn left and then immediately left again. You now cross the vineyards and head towards the ruins of Wachtenburg Castle. There you can enjoy the view over the Wachenheim and the surrounding wine landscape.
The climb to the castle ruins is steep, but the view makes up for the effort in any case and if you want, you can stop off at the castle tavern.
To return, follow the path uphill for a short distance before descending again after the bend. On the outskirts of Wachenheim, you reach the most beautiful wine view and have a wonderful view of the castle ruins. The path leads you once again into the vineyards in a southerly direction before the tour ends at the starting point on the market square.
